During the corona virus outbreak, I will be offering Zoom and FaceTime lessons to anyone who is uncomfortable with or who cannot get to my studio locations in Seattle and Kirkland. Hours are 2-8 Monday-Thursday (this will change when school is back in session) and as arranged. Zoom is a free service for this purpose and is compatible with both Microsoft and Apple systems. A condenser microphone is recommended, though not required. While these lessons are not the same as a live lesson, they can provide structure and help with progress when face to face meetings are impractical.
For the duration of the school closures, Mondays will be exclusively online and Saturday lessons will be in person only. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are available for both live (with infection precautions) and remote lessons. Please specify your preference.
I am planning future Zoom classes on reeds and instrument hygiene. Other topics to be announced and we may have some online recitals and masterclasses.
Please feel free to email me with questions and concerns. If you need help structuring your practice or if you have feedback or requests, feel free to ask.
Good luck and stay safe!

I will be giving lessons via Zoom, Google Hangouts, and FaceTime for any students who do not wish to or cannot meet me at my usual studio locations. Please let me know what your preferred format is—live or one of the above video methods. I am planning to be in my studio spaces in Seattle and Kirkland on my regular days, but will make sure that remote lessons happen at our regular times or at a different time arranged with me in advance. I do not teach on Sundays, but am open to any other day and times not necessarily listed on the website.
It is possible to play clarinet and saxophone safely with some common sense precautions.
—Do not allow others to handle your instrument.
—Wash your hands before and after playing or use hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol.
—Clean your mouthpiece with a mix of vinegar or lemon juice and COLD water for 2-5 minutes. Soak beak down and don’t wet the cork for clarinet mouthpieces. Rinse with COLD water and wipe with a soft cloth. This removes deposits where bacteria and viruses can hide.
—Disinfect your reeds after playing by rubbing with rubbing alcohol, washing with soap and water (NB—perfume tastes REALLY bad, so use a mild soap), or original (yellow) Listerine or generic equivalent.
—Wash your swab in a delicates bag (a mesh lingerie bag) with your clothes. Air dry.
Remember, these hints are to keep you healthy and also to keep others healthy!
Stay well everyone—and see you soon, either in person or on Google Hangouts, FaceTime, or Zoom!
